Not too long ago TIME Magazine published an article that mentioned new drug-free treatments for patients undergoing major depression. Exercise, mindfulness, and the treatment that I am most familiar with, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), were also listed as possible non-drug depression treatment options. I was excited to see that alternative medicine is finally becoming more publicized and widely available for those struggling with depression. This gives me hope, that those who struggle with the unbearable side effects caused by antidepressant medications can finally find relief from their depressive symptoms.
As a TMS technician and student continuing my education in medicine, I do not think that medications are the most horrible thing in the world but I also believe that they are not the only answer to all problems. I have been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to learn what TMS is and work with patients undergoing daily TMS depression treatments. Through my experiences working with patients, it has been amazing to see how many patients have found relief from TMS therapy. I have seen patients cut down on medications and reduce the side effects they have, all the while finding relief from their depressive symptoms. I am thankful that this technology is an option. I always tell the patients I work with that, knowing there are little to no side effects, this new depression treatment along with exercise, mindfulness, rest and nutrition are definitely worth a shot!
