What is TMS?
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is a relatively new treatment method, receiving FDA approval in 2008, and is helping people worldwide conquer the devastating effects of depression. TMS is a safe, non-invasive therapy that utilizes magnetic pulses to produce electrical currents that stimulate nerve cells in the brain. The client, fully alert, relaxes in a comfortable chair and a helmet with internal coils is placed gently on the head. The coils are positioned strategically to allow the electromagnetic currents to stimulate the region of the brain called the prefrontal cortex, the area responsible for mood regulation.
The client will feel the tapping sensation of the pulses as the currents penetrate the scalp and target the nerve cells. The resulting rebalancing of the neurotransmitters, through stimulating or modulating them, has a positive effect on the client’s mood, concentration, and wellbeing. The treatments span 4-6 weeks, with sessions five days a week, each lasting about 20 minutes. The client can resume their regular activities immediately after the treatment sessions.
What is Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)?
Most healthy individuals experience fluctuations in mood, but when feelings of despair and sadness persist for most of the day and for a period of two weeks or more, they may be suffering from clinical depression. According to the DSM-5, symptoms of major depressive disorder might include:
• Fatigue and decreased energy
• Impaired concentration
• Persistent sadness
• Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed
• Irritability and restlessness
• Feelings of worthlessness and guilt
• Sleep disturbances, such as insomnia or excessive sleeping
• Recurring thoughts of death or suicide
• Over eating or loss of appetite
Who Benefits from TMS Treatment?
TMS is indicated when a patient diagnosed with MDD has failed to achieve positive results from the traditional therapeutic regimen of anti-depressants and psychotherapy. Some patients battling MDD cannot tolerate the side effects of the medications, which can be quite uncomfortable. Common side effects to anti-depressants include weight gain, sexual dysfunction, sleep disturbances, irritability, nausea, gas and bloating, and headache.
Only about 50% of patients are successfully treated with medications, so millions can now be helped for their symptoms of depression with TMS. If the medications prescribed have not produced relief in symptoms, and depression continues to negatively impact your life, you may want to give this cutting edge alternative treatment a try.
Are there any Side Effects to TMS?
TMS is very well tolerated, with few, if any, side effects. Because it does not involve taking medications, there are no systemic side effects like the ones caused by anti-depressants. There is no anesthesia administered, so there are none of the risks associated with them.
Some clients experience minor irritation of the scalp at the point where the pulses are delivered, but this discomfort is usually absent after the first session. Also, some clients have reported headache following a treatment, but again, this seems to be a transient effect that decreases over the course of the sessions.
