Achieve TMS now offers transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy from our new Shoreham Place office in San Diego. Here, we perform TMS therapy to help patients dealing with major depressive disorder (MDD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and other mood disorders.
Depression can cause ongoing feelings of sadness, disinterest in work, school, and other daily activities, anxiety, trouble thinking, and frequent or recurring thoughts of suicide or death. Along with emotional symptoms, depression can cause back pain, headaches, and other physical problems.
By meeting with a doctor, people coping with depression can explore ways to manage their emotional and physical symptoms. Depression treatment may include psychotherapy, medication, or both, and it is tailored to each patient. If the patient’s symptoms linger after a depression therapy program gets underway, or initial treatments are not effective, alternative options may be necessary.
At our Shoreham Place treatment center, medical clinicians work with patients to help them safely manage symptoms of depression and other mood disorders. We recognize there is no one-size-fits-all approach or treatment to effectively manage mood disorders, and we closely evaluate each patient to figure out why past treatments were ineffective or caused intolerable side effects. This allows us to determine if TMS therapy can help a patient reduce or alleviate depression symptoms.
At our Shoreham Place facility, we develop and deliver custom TMS therapy and depression treatment programs for our patients.
A TMS therapy program consists of 20-minute sessions held five days a week for six weeks. Patients are required to visit our Shoreham Place office for each therapy session. Since there is no downtime associated with TMS, patients can resume their normal activities after each session.
During therapy sessions, a magnetic coil is attached to a patient’s forehead, close to the left temple. The coil delivers gentle magnetic pulses that stimulate neurons in areas of the brain responsible for mood. By stimulating neural activity in this part of the brain, TMS can help mitigate symptoms of depression and/or other mood disorders.
TMS is not invasive, and it does not require medication, anesthesia, or electrical shocks. Some patients experience a slight headache after therapy sessions; many patients experience no discomfort at all and rest or meditate during treatment.
NeuroStar is an FDA-approved form of TMS treatment. It is intended for adult patients diagnosed with MDD who have been unable to improve their symptoms after using antidepressant medication(s). During NeuroStar therapy sessions, a magnet is used to stimulate nerve cells in the area of the brain believed to be responsible for mood. NeuroStar magnetic pulses may have a positive effect on neurotransmitter levels in the brain and help patients manage MDD symptoms. To date, more than 2 million NeuroStar treatments have been delivered globally, and NeuroStar therapy is widely reimbursed by commercial and government health plans.
BrainsWay is an FDA-cleared therapy designed for patients dealing with depression and/or OCD. It uses deep TMS (DTMS) technology to target specific areas of the brain. With BrainsWay therapy, coils are fitted into a helmet, and the helmet is attached comfortably and securely to a patient’s head. These coils stimulate deep and broad neuronal targets to help improve patient symptoms. BrainsWay has been used in over 60 clinical trials worldwide. The therapy has led to remission of depression symptoms in approximately one-third of MDD patients. In a multicenter study of OCD patients, participants reported improvement approximately six weeks after BrainsWay therapy.
