Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Offers Hope to Many
Achieve TMS, the premier provider of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) in Southern California, has opened a new treatment facility in Palm Desert. Manish Sheth, MD, one of the board certified physicians on staff at Achieve TMS, was recently featured on KMIR’s television show, Desert Living Show. Here is the video from that appearance, where Dr. Sheth explains how TMS works wonders for patients who have not found relief using the typical medications prescribed for depression.
Depression is a debilitating condition that often has devastating consequences for those who suffer from it. Symptoms of major depression include the loss of drive and ambition, sleep disorders, disrupted eating habits, a lack of interest in activities they once enjoyed, and a general withdrawal from friends and family. Depression causes cognitive impairment, affecting learning, memory, an inability to concentrate, and executive functions (reasoning, planning, problem solving, etc.). Those struggling with MDD may experience significant losses–loss of a job, a marriage, significant relationships—due to the fallout from the symptoms of relentless depression that do not respond to treatment.
The medical practitioners at Achieve TMS have helped countless patients suffering from MDD, beginning their practice offering regular psychiatric care about twenty years ago. Then, in 2008, the FDA cleared TMS for treating patients who had proven to be medication-resistant, and the difference in the results they have witnessed in using TMS therapy is astounding.
TMS Works where other Treatments Fail
The traditional treatment regimen for TMS involves prescribing selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, from the class of drugs known as anti-depressants. Combined with psychotherapy, this treatment protocol is effective in only half of the patients suffering from MDD. For the 50% of patients who achieved no relief from their depression symptoms, making use of an alternative treatment like TMS can make all the difference in one’s quality of life.
TMS technology is able to specifically target the region in the brain, the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for mood, decision-making, impulse control, and general cognitive behavior. This is achieved by placing a comfortable helmet on the patient’s head, a component of the Brainsway technology system—which functions similar to an MRI machine. The helmet has magnetic coils integrated inside which are placed strategically over this area of the brain. The patient is fully alert and requires no anesthesia for the treatment session, which lasts 20-40 minutes.
During the session, short, repetitive magnetic pulses are delivered through the coil into the scalp, reaching up to 6 cm into the brain. Electrical currents then stimulate cells within the brain that release neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and serotonin, rebalancing them. Few, if any, side effects have been reported, other than some discomfort during the first session at the site on the scalp where the pulses are delivered. Sessions are prescribed for 4-6 weeks, five times per week.
