During TMS depression treatment, it is vital that patients remain consistent in their intake of medications, caffeine, alcohol, and other substances that could potentially alter the chemical balance in the brain. For example, if a patient drinks 3 cups of coffee every morning, it is important to drink the same 3 cups of coffee every morning through the duration of TMS treatment. While some look at this as just another thing to remember, others see it as an opportunity to move towards better health and wellness. If you have always had a goal of drinking less caffeine or alcohol, this is a great time to start…as long as you can remain consistent!
Both in the initial consultation and each day of TMS treatment, the technician asks a series of questions pertaining to caffeine, alcohol and medication intake. We technicians pride ourselves on being goal trackers and goal makers who are walking alongside our patients as a support system. As a lead technician at the Carlsbad TMS Center, I have seen many successes from patients who want to live a healthier lifestyle. One particular patient found that the ability to consume less caffeine during her TMS depression treatments drastically decreased her anxiety symptoms, a common disorder in conjunction with Major Depressive Disorder.
It is important to note that any change in medication must be prescribed by a primary prescribing physician and noted by the TMS staff to ensure effective depression treatment. Health and wellness go hand in hand, and it is the duty of our staff as well as the purpose of Achieve TMS to ensure a healthier and happier lifestyle for our patients!
