Achieve TMS is a leading provider of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) treatment for individuals coping with anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders. We also operate the only FDA-approved neuro-navigated TMS system in Southern California — the Nexstim system.
What Is the Nexstim System?
Nexstim is a neuromodulation company that has developed and pioneered targeted brain stimulation systems based on SmartFocus® TMS technology for both therapeutic and diagnostic applications.
SmartFocus® technology was developed for use in pre-surgical mapping of the brain. It forms the basis of Nexstim’s Navigated Brain Therapy (NBT®) system, which has the potential to be used to treat a variety of neurological and psychiatric conditions via TMS. It is currently cleared to treat Major Depressive Disorder (MDD).
What Are the Benefits of the Nexstim System for Patients Coping with Depression?
SmartFocus® TMS offers a customized, extremely accurate treatment of depression. It allows for highly accurate targeting of TMS via a 3D navigation system based on a patient’s MRI scan. This targeting is advantageous for patients with complex or refractory depression, or for those who have sustained a traumatic brain injury.
When used for TMS depression treatments, SmartFocus® ensures the stimulation dose is tailored to the individual. All information on a patient’s SmartFocus® TMS delivery and navigation is stored so that treatment can be repeated with precision at the correct location in his or her brain.
How Is a Nexstim Neuro-Navigated TMS System Treatment Performed?
A typical SmartFocus® TMS treatment program consists of five sessions per week, conducted over the course of four weeks. Each SmartFocus® TMS treatment session lasts up to 37 minutes per day and is completed at a doctor’s office or clinic.
Initially, a patient’s brain and cortex are measured prior to treatment, and this one-time setup sometimes takes longer than all other SmartFocus® TMS therapy sessions. The patient receives an MRI scan of his or her brain, and the scan is combined with measurements made by SmartFocus® to produce a detailed image of the brain. A SmartFocus® TMS operator can then find the exact spot to target the magnetic pulses in the patient’s brain.
The patient’s motor threshold is also measured via SmartFocus® TMS. This measurement allows a SmartFocus® TMS operator to determine the optimal stimulation dose for the patient.
During a SmartFocus® TMS therapy session, a patient sits in a reclining seat with a comfortable headrest. A wand-like TMS coil is placed against the patient’s head, and the patient wears a tracker with reflectors on the forehead that allows him or her to move the head without disrupting the treatment. The patient also wears earplugs that help block out a clicking sound that may occur during SmartFocus® TMS treatment.
The SmartFocus® TMS coil emits a magnetic field that moves safely through the head into a predefined spot in the cortex to gently activate neurons. It does not cause pain, but some patients experience a little tingling in the scalp.
Following a SmartFocus® TMS treatment session, patients can resume their normal activities. Since patient data is saved, SmartFocus® TMS therapy sessions can be repeated easily and accurately, and patients can receive the same prescribed dose to the same location.
Are You a Good Candidate for SmartFocus® TMS?
The NBT® system is intended for use to help patients dealing with depression. It has been FDA-approved for marketing and commercial distribution for the treatment of MDD, and CE-marked in Europe for treatment of major depression and chronic neuropathic pain.
SmartFocus® TMS may provide an alternative to antidepressant medications among patients who are dealing with MDD. It does not require the use of any depression medications, nor does it cause nausea, vomiting, or other side effects commonly associated with antidepressants. MDD patients may pursue SmartFocus® TMS as an alternative to depression medication, or in combination with other depression therapies.
Should Depression Patients Pursue SmartFocus® TMS?
MDD patients who previously tried antidepressant medications and found them to be ineffective may benefit from SmartFocus® TMS. Also, SmartFocus® TMS can be used by MDD patients who are currently using medication, psychotherapy, and other depression treatments, and are searching for complementary depression therapies.
The Nexstim system provides a noninvasive, drug-free treatment for patients dealing with MDD. It is the only neuro-navigated TMS system that is FDA-approved and CE-marked for pre-surgical mapping of the speech and motor cortices of the brain. The Nexstim system has also been sold to approximately 150 research universities and hospitals worldwide. Achieve TMS is the only TMS group that offers this advanced targeted TMS therapy in Southern California.
